Dark Fantasy Books

If you’ve started reading The Dance Between Us, you already know that magic in this world is a biological toll. The deeper a practitioner reaches into the fraying edges of the Veil, the more of their humanity they leave behind.

While Tier I Naturalists are still tethered to the living world, Tier II Elementals are entirely different monsters. They are “Feral Pulses”—singular forces of destruction where the human soul has been completely hollowed out and replaced by raw, unthinking elements.

Here is a look behind the curtain at the brutal mechanics, environmental tells, and tactical countermeasures of the Elemental Tier.

The Biological Rewrite: How an Elemental is Born

The transition to Tier II requires a total surrender of human systems. The magic demands humanity as its fuel, resulting in terrifying physiological changes:

  • Organ Failure: Internal organs cease their mundane labor to make room for pure energy.
  • Liquid Flame and Silt: Human blood is replaced by a pressurized slurry of salt and silt, or liquid fire that cauterizes blood vessels from the inside out.
  • Atmospheric Breath: They no longer exhale air. An Elemental breathes out a freezing gale or a searing heat wave, fundamentally breaking the local climate.

Reading the Bruised World: 4 Ways to Track an Elemental

In The Dance Between Us, characters don’t track Elementals by looking for footprints. They look for the ways the laws of physics have been physically assaulted. If you find yourself in a Classified Zone, keep an eye out for these environmental traumas:

  • The Silence: A heavy, unnatural weight in the air. Insects stop humming and birds vanish, instinctively knowing the air has become too dangerous for song.
  • Reverse Ripples: A key indicator of a hydro-kinetic presence. When a stone hits water, the ripples move toward the center of the splash rather than away from it.
  • The Clock Test: To find a “Thin Spot” where the Veil is failing, you must hold a mechanical pocket watch against stone or bark. If the ticking starts to race or skip beats like a panicked heart, danger is near.
  • The Rust-Mist: A vibrating, metallic fog. Without a Lead-Glass Visor to filter it, the resulting Vertigo Surge will shatter your inner ear and leave you permanently blind.

The Three Faces of Raw Power

The Wardens break these threats down into a few distinct archetypes, each more terrifying than the last. First is the Terramancer, a master of density whose skin petrifies into shale and mica. She sends out an infrasound hum so low you feel it in your teeth, causing profound nausea. Worse, she fills the air with granite dust, causing a condition called “Gravel-Lung” that turns human lungs to dry parchment.

Then you have the Hydromancer, an apex predator nearly invisible in the water. She manipulates surface tension to turn a gentle stream into a blade sharp enough to slice through bone, driving the local humidity to 100% so that every breath feels like drowning on dry land. Finally, there are the Storm Callers. Found on mountain peaks where the wind never settles, they cause sudden, violent atmospheric shifts. Right before they strike, you’ll see “Orbit-Debris”—stones and leaves revolving in perfect, eerie circles in mid-air.

How Do You Fight a Natural Disaster?

Going up against these forces with standard steel armor is a death sentence. Against fire, a steel plate becomes an oven; against stone, it simply shatters. Instead, characters must rely on flexible, alchemically salted leather and heavy greatcoats lined with lead and silver, which essentially act as a Faraday Cage for the soul to block out the low-frequency hums these witches emit.

Defeating them requires highly specific, tactical alchemy. For a Terramancer, you need black-powder wedges to disrupt fault lines and a bell-strike hammer to shatter her petrified skin with sound resonance. Hydromancers can be disrupted with salt-bombs, or hit with fine sand and sawdust to break the water’s surface tension and turn it into a useless sludge. And if you’re facing pure heat, quicksilver flasks are used as a grounding agent to rapidly draw away and neutralize the temperature.

Ready to Journey Deeper?

As terrifying as the Elementals are, they are still governed by the basic logic of storm and stone. But there is a deeper, much more tragic tier waiting in the dark: the Class III Anomalies. These are the timeline-breaking forces, the fractures in reality itself, that characters like Alva are forced to face.
